The power of kindness: to yourself, to others, to the world

As mums, we teach our children to be kind. We remind them to share, to say kind words, to consider the feelings of others. But how often do we teach them to be kind to themselves?

Many of us grew up believing that kindness means putting others first…always. That prioritising our own needs is selfish. That being “tough on yourself” is a virtue. But what if we’re missing something crucial? I teach my kids that kindness is their superpower.

Kindness to Yourself
True kindness begins within. When we constantly push ourselves to exhaustion, criticise our mistakes and neglect our own needs, we teach our children that self-care isn’t important. But when we show ourselves kindness, such as resting when we need to, speaking to ourselves with compassion and honouring our emotions we model a different kind of strength. A strength that allows us to care for others without losing ourselves in the process.

Kindness to Others
Of course, we want our children to be thoughtful, caring and generous. But kindness to others should not come at the expense of their own well-being. Teaching them to set boundaries, to express their feelings and to balance their own needs with those of others, helps them build relationships based on mutual respect.

Kindness to the World
When we are kind to ourselves and others, that kindness extends outward. It’s in the way we treat nature, the way we care for our communities, the way we choose to make a difference in the world. Small acts such as picking up litter, helping a friend, speaking up for what’s right, show our children that kindness has a ripple effect far beyond what we see.

Let’s redefine kindness. Let’s raise a generation that knows kindness is not about sacrificing ourselves but about creating balance, within, between and beyond. When we give ourselves the kindness, we so freely give others, we don’t just set a powerful example, we create a world where true kindness can thrive.

During my 6 sessions I learnt to treat myself as I would treat my friend. I gained confidence to start to like and appreciate myself which led me into becoming a much happier person. I realised that focusing on future plans and setting clear actions is the right way to keep the track of my life expectations. I know I don’t have to achieve it all, as long as I am happy with the process and end result.
