Grit for the overwhelmed mum: persisting with strength and grace

Being a mum is a marathon, not a sprint. Between managing busy schedules, meals, school forms, homework, and the constant emotional task of parenting, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, exhausted and stretched thin. The mental load is real, but so is your resilience.

Thomas Paine once said, “Every challenge is only a hurdle.” That’s all it is—something to be conquered. Challenges aren’t meant to defeat you; they actually make you stronger. When the weight of being a mum feels too heavy, remember that each difficult moment is shaping you into a more resilient, powerful version of yourself.

Angela Duckworth, the leading researcher on grit, defines it as “passion and perseverance for long-term goals.” Grit isn’t about perfection. It’s not about being the best. It’s about being better than you were yesterday. Some days, that might mean showing patience when you feel like snapping. Other days, it might mean simply getting out of bed and facing the day ahead. Small victories matter.

And here’s the truth

Without effort, talent and potential mean nothing. Effort is what turns chaos into progress. Every time you take a step forward, even when you’re exhausted, you are showing grit. You are modelling strength for your children. You are proving to yourself that you are capable of more than you think.

Determination is what keeps you moving forward, even when everything feels like it’s working against you. It’s the ability to stand back up after setbacks, to push through exhaustion, and to remind yourself why you started in the first place.

So, take a breath

You are not failing; you are growing. You are not just surviving; you are strengthening. One day, one step, one small act of perseverance at a time. Even on the hardest days, your perseverance is proof of your strength, and every step forward, no matter how small, is a victory worth celebrating.

Celebrate

Neuroscience suggests that celebrating small wins activates the brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine, which enhances motivation and reinforces positive behaviour. You could celebrate by taking a few minutes for yourself with a cup of tea, journaling about your progress, treating yourself to a favourite snack, sharing your achievement with a friend, or even just acknowledging your efforts with a positive affirmation. Small, intentional rewards can help reinforce your perseverance and build momentum for the journey ahead.

Recognising progress, no matter how minor, helps build resilience, reduces stress, and creates a feedback loop that encourages continued effort. This process strengthens neural pathways associated with perseverance and achievement, making it easier to sustain motivation over time.

Being a mum is not about perfection—it’s about perseverance. Each day that you keep going, no matter how challenging, is proof of your strength. So celebrate your small wins, embrace your progress, and trust that every step forward is shaping you into the resilient, unstoppable mum you were meant to be. Keep showing up, keep taking that small step, celebrate and remember—you’ve got this!
