“Our greatest weapon against stress is the ability to choose one thought over another” – William James, American psychologist.

Your fence has blown down; your partner has left you; your child is having a meltdown; your auntie has cancer….we all face multiple challenges of varying degrees on a daily basis, and that’s life. No one is immune from these challenges and frequently they out of our control. But what we are able to have control over is our minds.

The quote by William James above encapsulates the root of Positive Mental Fitness which is all about increasing the time that your mind serves you as opposed to sabotaging you. Increasing the time your mind is your friend, and decreasing the time your mind is your enemy. Strengthening your mental muscles enables you to face life’s challenges with a positive mindset rather than a negative one.

“Our greatest weapon against stress is the ability to choose one thought over another” – William James, American psychologist.

This quote encapsulates one of the most important elements of Positive Mental Fitness. This is at the cutting edge of research around our mind and how it works.  Imagine the impact if you could have if you could actually choose how your mind responds to things, instead of just reacting in the heat of the moment?

You have two very different regions of your brain:

The Survive Region of your brain – your inner Saboteurs

They exist in the brainstem, limbic system and parts of the left brain. They produce much of your stress, anxiety, self-doubt, anger, shame, guilt, frustration and mind chatter. These negative emotions are only helpful for a second as they alert you to dangers or issues. However, staying in these emotions hurts your ability to see clearly and choose the most helpful response.

The Thrive Region of your brain – your inner Sage

Your Sage lives in an entirely different region of your brain, the middle pre-frontal cortex, “empathy circuitry” and parts of the right brain. It generates positive emotions while handling life’s challenges. These include empathy, curiosity, compassion, gratitude, joy of creativity and calm, clear-headed, laser focused action. This region is wired for creativity and big picture awareness of what is important and the best course of action. Activating this region results in release of endorphins which counter the negative impact of stress induced cortisol.

Take the free Saboteur Assessment here to discover the most common ways you self-sabotage. The assessment takes approximately 4 minutes to complete.

Without building your Positive Mental Fitness muscles, you are not in command of your mind. You are not choosing what it’s thinking (that’s why you’re awake at 3am worrying!)

You may go to the gym and work with a personal trainer to build physical fitness muscles. I can help you build your mental fitness muscles by working with you as your Personal Positive Mental Fitness Coach. By strengthening your mental muscles you will learn to respond, not react. You will be able to model stable emotional behaviours to your family and colleagues. You will demonstrate resilience and sharp laser focused action in a crisis. You will be able to make clear decisions amidst the chaos of every day life.

I can show you how to significantly boost your mental fitness muscles in just 6 weeks. Click here to find out more about the Positive Mental Fitness Program.

Jackie has taken me from floating around wondering where I’m going, to taking actions that have led to an exciting decision and purpose that feels absolutely right. Through taking actions that I chose, I’ve found direction, motivation and vision. We’ve focused on my career, but the process has helped me identify my life priorities. Jackie’s warm and calming nature made me feel very relaxed and able to focus.
